Erica Brown - Bacteria Lead Erica is a pursuing a B.S., in bioengineering with a minor in sustainability studies. Besides BREATHE, Erica has worked on other sustainability research looking at the use of thermal cameras to track energy efficiency in urban environments. She is also a member of Flexus, the women in engineering living and learning program on campus. Erica enjoys reading, Netflix, skiing, and going to concerts in her spare time. Gabrielle Enguillado Gabrielle is majoring in architecture with a double minor in global poverty and sustainability. She is interested in design and hopes to work with creating sustainable buildings in future. Outside of Team Breathe, Gabrielle is the Cultural Chair for the Filipino Cultural Association at UMCP and is also a part of Habitat for Humanity. She also enjoys watching netflix, playing football, and drawing. Robert McDermott Robert is from Rockville, Maryland, and is pursuing a major in Cell Biology and Genetics. He is an avid runner, biker, and swimmer, hoping to someday find the time to join the university’s club triathlon team. He loves going to UMD’s various sporting events and frequently attends concerts on the weekends. Nicole Palumbo - Financial Liaison Nicole Palumbo is from Bridgewater, New Jersey and is currently pursuing a B.S. in Bioengineering. In the future she hopes to have a career in the biomedical instrumentation field. In addition to her work in the Gemstone program, she is a member of the BioMedical Engineering Society. Nicole enjoys watching classic films, going to see plays and musicals, and listening to live music. Jill Smith - Team Liaison Jill Smith is pursuing a B.S. in civil engineering with a focus on transportation/project management with a minor in Sustainability Studies. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Engineers Without Borders, and Saturday Philharmonia. Jill is from Bel Air, MD and enjoys reading mysteries and watching British comedies. Michelle Stanley - Professional Liaison Michelle is from Reisterstown, Maryland and is pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering with a structural focus and a minor in Construction Project Management. Michelle is a member of the university’s club softball team, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and Project Hello Stranger. Michelle also enjoys working on theatre productions in stage management and set construction areas. Morgan Sulzbach - Library Liaison Morgan Sulzbach is from Bel Air, Maryland and is pursuing degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering with a double minor in Sustainability Studies and Project Management. Morgan is a member of the club softball and on UMD's Solar Decathlon team. She enjoys watching Netflix, reading, and going to the beach. Jaclyn Taylor - Team Clerk Jaclyn is from Eastampton, New Jersey and is currently pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering with a double minor in Sustainability Studies and International Engineering. She is an active member of Engineers without Borders’ Sierra Leone team and enjoys country music, macaroni and cheese, and doing arts and crafts until early hours of the morning. Dr. Steven M. Cohan Dr. Cohan completed a B.S., in Ornamental Horticulture at Iowa State University, and his M.S, and Ph.D. in Plant Genetics at Pennsylvania State University. He has worked as a Senior Research Biologist at the Monsanto Company and Director of Planting Breeding at the Pan American Seed company, among others. Dr. Cohan now works in the Plant Science and Landscape and Architecture Department at the University of Maryland and is working on research to enhance storm water mitigation performance through the development of low carbon footprint substrates and wireless monitoring. Besides this he teaches classes on green roofs and urban sustainability, as well as environmental horticulture and communication in the green industry. Dr. Andrew G. Ristvey Dr. Ristvey is an Extension Specialist for Commercial Horticulture at Wye Research and Education Center at Queenstown, MD and affiliate faculty with the Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Master of Science degree in 1993 from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore in the MEES program. Soon after he worked on shoreline restoration and then wetland and forest-stand delineation. He spent two years doing environmental and horticultural education at Adkins Arboretum inside Maryland's Tuckahoe State Park. Dr. Ristvey earned his Doctorate in Horticulture in 2004 after 6 years of research on plant nutrition and nutrient management. His present extension and research interests are plant nutrition, sustainable alternative crop production with the fruit Aronia and green roof systems. Svetla Baykoucheva, PhD Svetla Baykoucheva (Baykousheva) is the head of the White Memorial Chemistry Library at the University of Maryland College Park. For more than 20 years she has performed interdisciplinary research in infectious microbiology and biochemistry, and has published more than 40 articles in peer-review scientific journals such as the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry, Journal of Chromatography, and FEBS Letters. She was also the editor of the Chemical Information Bulletin (published by the ACS Chemical Information Division) and manager of the Library and Information Center of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Washington, D.C. In 2005 she moved back to academia to become head of the White Memorial Chemistry Library at the University of Maryland College Park, where she teaches scientific information and bibliographic management. |
